The 13th and 14th centuries were times of great upheaval:  the plague was sweeping through Europe; the Inquisition was at its height; and the leadership of the Church of Rome was contested, causing a rival papacy to be formed in Avignon as well as in the Eternal City.  In the midst of this darkness was a flowering of mysticism throughout the world.  In England as well as on the Continent, many women and men experienced a connection with God that has left us with a rich legacy of spiritual wisdom and insight.
