Authentic Movement: An Introductory Class Series

Authentic Movement is an exploration of the unconscious and a process of becoming through movement.  As Instructor Gaye Lagana knows it Authentic Movement was developed by Janet Adler whose background spanned various traditions and mystical studies.  This process of becoming is not based on a religious philosophy, but has elements in common with many traditions, e.g., developing an inner witness and developing skills of concentration and attention.  While the modality is movement, one does not need prior movement experience to participate.

Although there is a structure and guidelines for participating, there are not rigid rules for movement expression.  The instruction for movement is to wait for an impulse to move, such as an impulse from the body, a story from within prompting movement, or an emotion or pain which one wishes to explore.  This movement is done in the presence of a witness.

In this beginning class your instructors, Gaye Lagana and Kathy Oettinger, will also serve as witnesses.  Witnesses focus on tracking the movements of the movers and listen to the movers self- reports about their movements.  The witnesses do not interpret the meaning of the movement, nor judge the quality.  The mover ascribes meaning to their own movement.  During this process, movers and witnesses come to deeper levels of self-understanding and integration of their, physical, mental, emotional and spiritual self.
